Illegal Trade in Fauna and Flora 12/09/2026

After a week of heavy rain and cold, wet weather, we were unsure whether our event with David Newton, Director of TRAFFIC in South Africa and Africa, would go ahead at all. TRAFFIC is a leading global non-governmental organisation working to ensure that trade in wild plants and animals is legal and sustainable.

After consulting Lindsay Lewis, Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve Manager, and checking several weather apps, we identified a small window of opportunity and decided to go for it. The group of nearly 40 SA Hunters members, Paarl Rotarians and learners from surrounding schools had been looking forward to the event for weeks. It proved well worth it.

David provided fascinating insights into the illegal trade in wildlife and plant species, taking us from elephant tusks and rhino horn to abalone, shark fins, seahorses, succulents and much more. Being able to see and touch confiscated items, including dried shark fins, seahorses, abalone and pangolin scales, brought the scale and reality of this trade to life. David and Lindsay also shared their knowledge of plants found in the reserve that have traditionally been used for medicinal purposes, adding another important dimension to the discussion.

It was an engaging and thought-provoking experience, made even more memorable by the fact that the rain stayed away just long enough for us to enjoy a well-earned boerewors roll at Krismiskamp on top of the mountain! The very positive feedback afterwards, including questions about career opportunities in conservation and the fight against the illegal wildlife and plant trade, showed just how much the event had resonated with participants.

Ultimately, the day reminded us that conservation is not only about protecting plants and animals, but also about people who are willing to learn, get involved and make a difference. Through awareness and involvement, each of us can help preserve our natural heritage for future generations.
